Exclamation Kenmore washer agitates but will not spin, why?
Model Number: 110.22942100   Brand: Kenmore   Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

Washer Details: Manufacturer: Kenmore Model #: 110.22942100
On a regular cycle the washer tub fills up according to the load and starts to agitate. When I put it in a spin cycle, the water drains and I hear the motor making noise, but the tub will not spin, so the cloths will stay drenched. This implies the Switch is working, since the motor is spinning and stops making noise when I open the lid.
I took out the motor, clutch and transmission assembly, when I spin the motor clockwise, the clutch starts to spin, so the transmission is okay.
The plastic actuator is also not broken.
Now there are two things that could be bad: the clutch or the brake.
What should I do to see which of these are broken? What physical damage should I look for? Is there is something else?

Thank you for any help, I have spent all day trying to fix it.

The brake coupler is also not broken or worn out.

You probably have a worn clutch and bad brake shoes. If it still shakes when the washer is empty, you may have suspension problems, just check the springs.
You can do the tranny coupler test in my sticky, "replacing direct drive washer brake shoes".

Here are some pics of the brake and clutch. One other thing I noticed was that when I turned the tranny couple the, the tranny does not turn continuously, is that normal.

thank you so much for your time and help.

When I spin the tranny couple couter-clockwise, it agitates normally, but when I spin it clockwise, it rotates for a while and then it stops and starts to rotate again.

So is it just the tranny then or should i still just replace the clutch? Should I open up the transmission and see if there are broken gears or something? Thanks again.

You probably have a partially stripped nylon gear in the tranny, you can take it apart to confirm.

Okay I took it apart, but I need that special tool to take of the retaining ring. Hopefully I can replace the nylon gear, otherwise I am probably gonna buy a second hand washer. Thanks for the help.

You just pry it off with a flat blade screwdriver.

Richappy are you talking about the big plastic gear or some other gear under that one?
