Our Maytag washer smells burnt and really labors when starting the wash cycle. It does spin out just fine and water drains normally. I'm guessing a bad motor? Seems to give off the same smell in all wash cycles but labors much less during delicate wash. Please offer some ideas. Thanks

From your description, It sounds like you may have a bad motor. It really depends on the smell. It may also be a bad slipping belt (but you would probably also hear a screeching sound.

Try removing the belt, and set it on a spin cycle. Tell us what you observe.

Well, this machine is officially dead. I did lay it down on the front and discovered a huge amount of white shavings and even some aluminum shavings under the transmission. In addition there was some small amount of water leaking down from the center of the machine. Lastly, the motor smelled like it got seriously hot and had some dark areas on some of the wires going into it. Thanks for the interest but, I gave up and bought a new washer. Taking my chances on Maytag again....I'll cross my fingers.
