Wally,
It is very hard to say what you did wrong besides you did not have to pull the gear case. Where did you get the new belt? Is it original? It has to be original. Here are the break down diagrams for the Whirlpool washer Model LA7800XPW1 Gene.

thank you for your response. i got the belt from an auto supply it was the same size as the old belt (1/2x471/2) after looking at the mach. i didnt see any way other way to install the belt also i had a friend come over and he came to the same conclusion we are not appliance repairmen but we do work with tool sand could not see any other way. also this morning i turned the mach. over to look at it and found a small steel ball like a ball bearing it was not shiny and did look used but not sure.this model no. does not come up anywhere must be to old . why does the belt have to be original. any help would be greatly appreciated.
thank you wally |

You need the original belt 95405. Also, loosten tranny bolts, pull the tranny down, and insert the steel ball in the plastic spindle bearing slot just above the top of the tranny. Withoput this bearing, the basket will never spin.
