My matag top load washer will fill with water but will not go through any additional cycles after that. You can see the timer manually advancing and making a ticking noise but it will not agitate or rinse. Sometimes if you put the timer in another cycle from perma press to delicate it may continue but usually just nonresponsive

Since it does operate when you can get the timer to engage it, I would try replacing the timer.
