Default Bad noise & erratic motion when agitator runs
Model Number: KAWE560WWH2   Brand: Kitchen Aid   Age: More than 10 years

I ran it with the cabinet off and used the screwdriver/stethascope test to isolate the noise. It appears to be coming from the clutch.
What are the steps to remove it?

Either you have a bad tranny or a stripped agitator. I would remove agitator and check splines. If ok I would pull motor and pump and turn tranny coupler counterclockwise. If you feal tranny clunking you have a bad tranny.

Default The agitator looks OK

Is it safe the lay the washer on its side when removing the motor & tranny?

I never do this, I just tilt it back sufficiently to remove tranny, just less work.
