Hello and thanks for your help. Have searched all the forums but not found this exact problem or answer. Got a six year old Maytag Dependable Top Loader in good overall shape except for this. When entering the Spin Cycle, during a normal wash, motor will hum with a tub full of water and clothes. Push Selector knob in for off and back out, hum returns - no movement in tub

After searching forums and trying a few things, removed clothes from tub and drained the tub almost completely. Unplugged, removed front cover, leaned washer against wall, visually inspected belts for wear and play - seem normal and was able to hand turn the belt either way. Plugged back in and checked lid switch. Seems to work. When lid is up, won't hum, when down - does. While now plugged in and still leaning on wall, tried something new and tried to rotate belt again by hand - with just a little help, belt took off, motor started and washer fired up. Returned to floor - opened lid slightly to see slight agitation going on in tub. It just continues to do this for all of Spin Cycle and then cuts off into Off position on Selector per timer with water still in tub and no drain or spin. I have read on the Forums that because it never drained it will not spin. Drain hose seems to not be pinched or kinked.

Any ideas. I really appreciate it.

if it hums that means the timer is putting the voltage to it and it takes off when you apply power to it and give it a little help it means that the start windins in the motor are bad so I would say replace the motor

Thank you for your reply! And you believe by replacing the motor that will not only start up the motor by itself but once it's up and running have it do what it needs to do to drain out the water so that it can go into spin mode. Seems like there's sort of two issues here:

1. Eliminating hum and giving motor enough startup power to start on its own

2. And draining the tub so that it can go into full spin mode.

Well I believe so , remove the belt and turn the tranny by hand and verify it spins freely and verify the pump spins freely as well without a belt on it I would also replace the belts

So just to see, first I went ahead and just replaced the belts and no change so looks like it's the motor. Also I did drain out just about all the water. I can see that there's still some in the pump when I start the whole thing by hand and I watch it go through a whole spin cycle and all it does is agitate - it never actually spins - is this because every drop of water isn't out of the whole system - will changing the motor fix this as well you think - I'm just surprised the fast spin is never occurring in the spin cycle.

Without a meter to check things, it's an educated guess what is wrong. A new motor is worth a try. However, I'm leaning to a bad timer considering the symptoms. I believe your timer has a cover you can remove to inspect the contacts. Just look for burnt ones.

I thought you said it would take off and spin if you gave the motor a helping hand

I will post a diaGRAm of a test cord you can make to test the motor directly,with straight voltage you may have to get some aligator clips on the end of the cord depending on what typ of motor switch you have

Thanks Rich. Also, if the timer was bad, should it still be able to cycle through each setting? For example if I put it in Rinse, it will time into spin but then just sit there and if I push the selector switch in and back out, I get the hum as I am now in the Spin Cycle. And now I could start it by hand by giving the belt a spin and again it will agitate till the timer is done and then go to the Off position again.

Removed cover and timer looks just about new. Pulled harness and no burnt contacts anywhere.
