Question Washer Squeals
Model Number: ALW480DAW   Brand: Amana   Age: 5 - 10 years

My washer squeals/groans when it's in a spin cycle. I don't have a repair manual, but I suspect it to be a bearing. Any ideas?

GaryM.

It could be a bearing, it could be a belt, and it could be a pump. Take the front off, and see if you can located the noise. Tom ApplianceEducator.com

The noise appears to be in the area of the belt. When I rotated the belt by hand to inspect it, I noticed that it was cut almost all the way through. I suspect that this is the culprit. I also saw the bearing on the bottom, sprayed some BREAKFREE on it, then realized that that was a sealed bearing and the lubricant would have no affect on it. How do I get at the belt, and how do I change it?

Gary, the best way to do mthis is to take the 2 screws out that hold the whole motor, and pump assembly out, and then take off the belt, and remove the wiring harness from the motor, and then remove the whole assembly from the washer. Then remove the pump, and then the belt. Then reverse the process. Tom ApplianceEducator.com

I'll give it a shot this weekend, as the belt is in really bad shape.
