Model Number: KAWE570BWH1 Brand: Whirlpool Age: 5 - 10 years
The agitator is made in two parts. The bottom part seems to be working properly but the top part is barely moving at all. Could the top part possibly be tightened?

You most likely have a worn out set of agitator"dogs". Part number: AP3138838 The top part cannot be tightenned, it is desighned to "float" and drive the auger / screw part of the agitator. If the dogs wear out, they dont grip the auger and it barely moves. You may even want to consider a new "complete" agitator. But , that's where you want to start. Either way, To remove the agitator, You'll need to remove the top agitator cap or softner dispenser. Remove the plastic shield under the cap. With the shield removed you will see a 7/16" hex head bolt, in the center of the assembly, remove the bolt. You now need to lift up on the auger/screw assembly, it will lift out as a complete assembly, and repair/replace the "dog" assembly, or remove the lower portion and replace the agitator complete assembly. Good Luck,
