My washing machine(whirlpool top-loader,direct-drive) has been messing up latley. It started leaking from the bottom. The pump had a small hole in it got a new pump and all better. Now it fills up with water fine and agitates for about 2 mins and shuts off and has a burning smell. It wont come back on for about 15 mins. . I put it on the spin cycle to try and get the water out It also does the same thing. The washer will spin and drain for about 2 mins then the smoke smell then it sounds like the motor strts going really fast and it stops draining. I want to get some info on what could be wrong before I start blowing money on parts.

By what you are saying the motor sounds bad. If you replace the motor, you will need a coupler too. Tom ********************************************

Its sounds like it would be easier and more cost effective both in the short and long-term to replace the washing machine. if possible look in your phone book for used appliance dealers they can sell you a decent washer for cheap and might give you some kick back for your old washer.

Check your motor for evidence of water in the motor from the leaky pump. If so, go to my article in the forum announcements section "fixing appliance motors from flood damage" It might not be too late to save it.
