I have a Roper Washing machine and when I start any cycle it will fill and then stop if I turn the dial to rinse it will rinse but then stop and not change to the spin cycle.

What could be the cause or steps to trouble shoot?

See if you can hear the timer running after the fill.

do you mean hear it running when it should cycle but stops? cannot hear anything but the drum spinning when it first fills.

removed the top panel screws and check the wiring to make sure nothing was loose or shorting out, and now machine cycles properly what could I have done to fix it?

You probably made a questionable connection more solid, by jiggling wires or checking harness connections.

I have tried running a few cycles since and the issue happens still if I fiddle with the timer or lift the lid and back down it seems to work would this be a possible bad timer or failing one?

It could be a bad timer or a bad harness connector.
