Washer fills then starts spinning instead of agitating. Water drains if you put it on spin cycle. Did not try letting it go through whole cycle. Any suggestions? Thanks

The brakes are bad and the only way to repair this is to replace the transmission. The transmission is somewhat expensive but if you replace it yourself it isn’t too bad. This page will help with replacing the transmission should you decide to do so. GE Washer Disassembly Guide

The washers made during the time yours was made had a lot of problems with the brake bearing which causes the problem you are having. We use to be able to replace the bearings but they discontinued the bearings and now you have to replace the transmission.
