I own a Maytag Washer and the agitaor seems to go a bit hard. I was using it and there was a odor of something smelling hot. Like Rubber smell.
I looked at the belts and them seem to be a bit lose and I do believe that the smell is coming from the belt. It must be slipping. So would a new belt solve the problem or is it in the transmission or agitator end of it?? Please let me know.

This is a difficult diagnosis to make on a Forum, because there can be a number of potential causes of your problem.

I doubt if it is the belt, more likely the transmission given the age of your machine. I suggest you consider replacement, since new basic top loaders are being heavily discounted, and putting more money and time into your current washer may not be the best use of those resources.
