My wife said today that the washer smelled like burning rubber. I noticed tonight that it seems to stop quite abruptly at the end of the spin cycle or when the door is opened. Any suggestions? It seems like it should kind of slow to a stop rather than slamming to a halt.

The machine appears to function correctly other than this. It fills, agitates, drains etc.

You probably have dragging brake shoes, go to my sticky above "replacing direct drive washer brake shoes" for info on this.
