Model Number: WPRE6100GOWT Brand: GE Age: 1 - 5 years
I have a GE Profile top-loading washer that has been making a grading/screeching noise during the wash cycles for a few months. I can feel vibration that correlates with the noise in the two shock/rod assemblies on my left as I face the washer. The two on the right do not have a vibration. I have replaced these once before, but it did not fix the problem. I was curious at the time that the parts diagram shows the green shocks in the front and the white in the front. My washer came with the reverse installation from the factory. Anyway, I'm not sure what to try next. Any suggestions?

The bottom of this machine has a "pan" or floor that overs the entire surface of the unit. Remove the front panel and inspect the unit as it washes. Chances are good that you will be able to see what the cause is. Either the pan is slightly bent upward causing the belt pulley to rub on the floor pan, or your rubber shock absorbers at the top of the tub are broken allowing excessive turning during wash cycle allowing the tub to rub...a dub dub

There are two things that typically cause this problem one is the sifter coil and the other is the apron (in some cases both).
If the sifter coil fails the spin basket will rotate during wash, which will causes the bottom motor bracket to hit the shipping brace each time the motor changes directions. Take the front off and watch it during a wash cycle, if the spin basket is rotating during wash the shifter coil is bad. On some models the apron (bracket that holds the tub up) will have a tendency to bend down. On these models it can happen on its own but if the sifter coil is bad it will happen a lot quicker because the spin basket turning back and forth like that puts a big strain on the apron. This is known as the sagging apron issue. When this happens the motor bracket will hit the bottom of the washer when the tub is full of water.
