On normal cycle worked fine, on gentle cycle made a clunking noise then shut down and then just a humming noise.

The problem can be a fused contacts in the timer or a bad low/extra low speed motor windings.

Remove the timer. Remove the contacts shield and visually inspect the contacts for any burned spots. If there is nothing wrong, replace the motor.

How do I take washing machine apart to find these parts. It's an old one and looks like the front slides? Whirlpool model # LA8800XTWo
