The washer will not move to the next step in washing cycle. I have to turn the knob to the next step in the wash cycle. Clothes washes all night and was stuck in the washing mode. I have to make it empty tub, make it spin and refill by physically turning the knob myself.
What else could it be?

Looks like you are on the right track.
Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the screw from each side of the console behind the end caps. Pull the console forward and up to remove the tabs on the bottom of the end caps, out of the holes in the top. Lift the console up and lay it on its back. Gene.
