I am in the process of replacing the transmission on a GE washer. I have taken the tub out of the unit and removed the motor and motor mount. Also have removed the agitator and the air bell coupling.

Last thing to do is to unscrew the left-threaded hub nut. Any tips for how to remove it? It's on pretty tight, esp with a little rust that built up over time.

Also, there is a piece that is about the same outer diameter as the inner diameter of the hub nut. What is that piece and do I need to remove it before unscrewing the hub nut?

You have to have a spanner wrench to remove that big nut.

Do not buy the spanner wrench shown in the guide. The only wrench that will work is WX5X1325, rather expensive around $50

I have one of those spanner wrenches and it works fine. Not as good as the GE but it will work. I used it the last two times I had to have to take a tub out. You have to put the adapter on then the wrench. I wrote the page and I didn’t put the link to the cheaper spanner wrench until I bought one and tried it for myself.
