My washer would not drain during the spin cycle, I was able to get it to drain by changing the cycle so I don't think there is an obstruction. Could it be the timer?

It could be, I would try the same thing over and monitor the pump during the spin cycle

Okay, now at the risk of sounding stupid, and I hate to throw out the I'm a girl card but what is the best way to monitor the pump.

Raise the top with a putty knife or similar tool, remove the front panel and run a cycle with the front panel removed. See what it does. It is still possible to have a "floating" obstruction, one that only blocks drainage occationally. Trust me If I can do some of these things so can you!
