Model Number: PAV2360AWW Brand: Maytag Age: 1 - 5 years
When the spin cycle stops there is a squealing sound that sounds just like wornout brake on a car. The belt seam tight and in good condition. Does the motor have a brake on it and can it be replaced or is there something else.

It is the break making the noise and it will need to be replaced.
Part Details - WHIRLPOOL BRAKE ROTO, part number: AP4373023 It takes a special break took to get it apart safely as there is a heavy duty spring inside the break package.

No need to buy/rent the special brake release tool. For Performa washers, the brake housing screws are long enough to back them out evenly till the tension of the brake spring is released. If you are worried about the spring popping out, you can leave the pulley in place while removing the screws. This will prevent the housing from popping out.
However, it is a big job. I use vice grips to remove the tub springs, and thick washers to stretch the springs. remove the tub and tranny as an assembly, turn upside down and proceed to remove pulley and brake housing. In the special case the screws are too short, you can replace them one at a time with 8-32 machine screws 1 1/2 inch long.
