My Maytag MAV408DAW will not agitate but will fill spin and drain. It started making a lot of noise during agitation before agitation stopped working.

The brake stops the spin function. Since you have the front off, Tilt the machine back far enough to access the transmission pulley. Remove the belt and turn the pulley by hand. One direction will operate the spin: The brake should release within one rotation and the basket will spin. The other direction will operate the agitator. If you get a lot of racket and resistance, replace the transmission.
