I have a top load Norge washer that makes intermittent loud noises both in wash cycle and spin cycle. Sounds as if something like loose coins in the mechanisms. I tried to remove the agitator, but could only get the agitator cap and bolt removed.
How do I remove the agitator to check for the source of the noise.

The agitator should lift off the shaft, once the bolt is removed. You might try to feed a couple cargo tie-down straps under the edges of the agitator, and rocking back and forth to break it loose. Be careful as it does, though. It will hurt your face if it releases suddenly. I usually re-thread the bolt in just enough to stop the upward "snap".

Thanks for your answer! I appreciate you trying to help. I unscrewed the bolt and got the agitator out of the washer easy enough, but the top part (clothes mover) will not separate from the bottom part of the agitator so I can replace the part. There are also four steel tabs holding the old part down that won't budge!

Tried that. Also tried prying off, using rope under agitator and evrything else I can think of, but will not move.

Beyond recommending a penetrating oil (which is a messy affair) sprayed into the agitator, down the shaft, I can't offer much else. At times, I have had to make the decision to crack the agitator with a chisel, and remove it in pieces. Of course, this requires that a replacement be available.

Finally got off with steel cable, 2X4 and large pry bar.
