The washer fills with water but does not engage the agitator for the wash cycle. The machine is dormant through the entire wash cycle. After the timer passes the wash cycle it agitates properly through the rinse cycle, drains and spins as normal. I replaced the lid switch. Nothing changed. What is the problem?

Since it agitates in the rinse cycle, there does not appear to be any mechanical problems. I would think that the problem is with the timer. Try cleaning the contacts before replacing it.
