Maytag LAT3910aaw top loading washer. Spin cycle is OK but during washing, agitator moves back and forth a little then stops, and there is a burning smell. Don't know whether it is belts or something more serious

Thanks,
Tom

It could be the transmission, but more likely a problem with the brake that holds the tub while in agitation mode.

With a machine your age I strongly recommend replacement rather than repair.
