My parent's GE washer was making a thumping noise while in the spin cycle. I open the door and found plastic shavings inside of the door gasket at the drain hole. I removed the bottom panel and removed the drain filter, it was clogged with money, a key and many plastic shavings. The water must not have been emptying completely out of the clothes and caused the drum to go off balance. When the machine ran off-balanced, it wore into the plastic housing for the front drum. I plan to change the front tub (AP3884038) housing, but my question is, "Should I replace the rear tub?" (AP3884028). I can't tell if the bearing or the seal in the rear tub housing is in good shape or not, and I don't want to change the front and then have issues with the rear in a few months. Is there a way that I can check this out???

Well to be honest this is not a fix that I have done, and I doubt if there have been many done by those of us who reply on this Forum, so unless someone else chimes in I think the best advice is to look at the parts when you have it apart and make your best decision on what you see.

Thanks for the reply, but all of the parts that I might have had to replace came up to just over $800.00 dollars. My dad thought that was too much money to spend and not have any warranty, so he decided to buy a new top load washer. (Kenmore). My friend called a person he knows that repairs appliances and the person mentioned that the front load washer put him out of business. He said that no one wanted to spend the money to repair them and they just bought new ones.....Oh well thanks again...

Well I think that is the right decision, the front loaders in my opinion are a disaster. The axis is perpendicular to the pressure, which means ultimately the suspension breaks down, and the electronic controls do not add anything to the equation except cost and unreliability.
