My Ge was bought in 1991. It filled up with water but would not function other wise. I figured out I needed a lid switch. GE no longer made it so I could not get it locally. AppliancePartsPros.com had the WH12X494 part which was made by someone other than GE. Fine I thought. I ordered it.

When I went to work on the washer I found the old part had 2 brass areas where wire clips were attached. The new part has 3 brass areas where wire clips attach. There are 2 brass areas which extend straight out from the switch at either end, the new switch as an additional brass area that bends up at an angle to attach a wire clip or connector to it.

Will this part work?
What do I do about the extra brass area which would accept a wire clip or connector? I don't have a wire to connect to it.

What you got is a universal switch, which will always have three terminals. What you do is plug the two wires into the terminals marked No and C and leave the other one alone. The switch will work.
