Every once in a while this machine will start banging around and not complete fully "sping dry" clothes/blankets/towels because of an imbalanced load. Today was the last straw for the wife and she is threatening to go out and buy a top loader. We have the pedestals as they were installed by Sears when the machine was delivered. Seems to work fine for days and then for whatever reason starts to go out of balance. You could do an entire load of towels and it would be fine but this morning it was a full load of baby clothes and her small baby blanket. The machine backed right into our wall pinning the hot/cold lines. Anyway I'm wondering if it couldn't be a weak or broken spring/damper. Is there any way to test this? Is it worth disassembling the unit to take a look at the top and bottom springs/dampers?

The unit has pretty much done this from day one. I've levelled it numerous times with a level - it sits on a solid concrete floor in our basement. Just no rhyme or reason as to why this thing goes out of balance periodically. Doesn't even have to be towels or blankets. Could just be a load of darks. Typically though when there's some heavier clothes like 3-4 pairs of jeans for example.

Any suggestions or links to service manuals would be more than appreciated and might even save my marriage! :) This machine was upwards of $800 and a recommended CR buy a couple years ago - I guess they just don't make 'em like they used to....

I cannot get your model number to come up, but it sounds like something was amiss from the factor. Front loaders are notorious about having this problem because the weight is perpendicular to the axis of the tub.

I really dislike GE front loaders for reasons like your problem, so take that prejudice into account when I tell you to junk the thing and get a nice, no frills top loader.

Thats going to mean acknowledging that I was wrong and that the MOTHER-IN-LAW was right when she said not to get one because they're always out of balance! I may as well turn my man card in here and now :)

According to Consumer Reports all manufacturers are pretty much even when it comes to reliability scores. Any service guys out there want to recommend any brand over another?

A basic no frills top loader from Whirlpool/Kenmore (or its other brands like Roper or Estate which are Whirlpool products but sold for less so as not to undercut the Whirlpool pricing) or one from GE, Frigidaire, or Maytag should do fine. I lean against the GE because they do not allow their tech data to be released outside of their authorized service techs.

If you really need a front loader, a Frigidaire/Kenmore without electronic controls is about the best out there, but expect it to cost more and be less reliable then a top loader. Whatever you do, do not get anything with electronic controls.

Other than that I have no strong opinions.

Sorry about that mother-in-law thing, been there, done that (we all have).
