Question Kenmore 90 Series - How to service the drive block?
Model Number: 90 Series   Brand: Kenmore   Age: More than 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

Hola.

I have been having spin issues with my washer, and I've already elimated the coupler & the door switch as the culprits. From what I've been finding online, it looks like the cause of the problem is a worn-out drive block.

My problem is that I cannot figure out how to get to the drive block to verify it is worn and to replace it. I have removed the agitator cap, and I expected to see a bolt to remove. However, all I see is a round piece of metal which is inset about 1 inch down a narrow hole. How am I supposed to remove that? I have posted 2 links below to pictures of it. Can anyone help figure out how to get to the drive block?

Thanks,
Andrew

I don't see a video on that page, but i was able to get past this point by taking pliers and turning the inner plastic part until it came out. There is a spring attached to the bottom of that piece. Once that piece was out, then I could use a socket driver to remote the bolt.

Default spin issues

Kenmore washers use a 1/2" socket driver to attach their agitator cam assembly. Just insert a 1/2' socket driver and rotate counter clockwise. pliers will work to but you may crack the nut if you are not careful. The free videos at ApplianceAssistant.com are flash8 format so you may need to update your flash player, also internet explorer has problems with flash so you may want to try another browser like Firefox, Opera, or Safari. The videos will show you how to make any repairs to that washer that you may need to do. I hope that helps some, sorry for the slow reply I will try to be faster next time or you can email me directly at admin@applianceassistant.com

Thanks for the reply. I actually got past that point, but then couldn't remove the basket out to get to the drive block. Please see the video I took explaining my issue, and provide me any feedback that might help.

Look at the drive block threads while the basket is turning. The drive block is probably turning along with the spin basket. If so, put the drive block nut back on and pull your tranny out, you have a worn out clutch that sits on top of the tranny. You can go to my sticky "replacing direct drive washer brake shoes" for info on this common problem.

Everything looks great in your video. The agitator shaft should not move during final spin. Most models have a small plastic clip with two posts, one that inserts down into the open notch on the drive block and the other pointed up. A half crescent clip then slides over the upper plastic post. This clip will engage the agitator during final spin and cause it to gradually gain speed at the drum accelerates. The agitator should be in a free spin mode and rotate at the same rate as the clothing in the drum due the clothing's movement. If you need to help the inner drum to spin (I didnt see that in the video) you likely need to look at the clutch to see if the pads are in good shape or possibly the transmission has leaked oil on the clutch pads and are causing them to slip. In the video that all looked fine. Take a look at the drive system video (I hope you can view it now, if not please let me know so I can solve that problem.)

I hope that helps out some. I did not go into enough detail about that clip in the agitator video...I guess its time for an amendment.
