Only certain segments of my 5 cycle top load whirlpool washer function. To complete a load, I manually move it through a wash cycle to segments of different cycles that work. The dial mechanism does move through a complete cycle but the individual segments, wash, rinse, spin, extra rinse don't all start or complete as the dial moves.

If your machine works mechanically then the problem is likely with the timer, but you will need a model number to order to correct part.
