Default Kenmore won't spin, but hear motor
Model Number: 3953245   Brand: Kenmore   Age: 1 - 5 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com
Hello- I just bought a used Kenmore washer, and after lugging it down to the basement, discovered it doesn't work. It fills, and I can hear what sounds like the motor, but no spin or agitation. I read the response from Gene to someone about a broken motor coupling, and wonder if there's a good way to test that visually or by hand.
EDIT:
When I say it won't spin, I don't just mean the spin cycle- I mean it doesn't turn on its own at all.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance--

with a full model number it's easier. But assuming it starts with 110., then yes. You will have to raise the top of the machine, remove the front panel and locate the pump disconnect the electricals to the pump and remove the clips. You can then manuver the pump out of you way to see the coupler between the pump and motor. There are 2 plastic white sections with 3 "legs" and a rubber grommet in the middle, which makes up the coupler. if the legs are broken that's your problem. Cheap easy fix.
Hope that helps,
Nat

Hi Nat-
Thanks for the quick response. I just checked, and the "legs" seem fine. I can turn the coupling by hand. I also realized that I was looking in the wrong place for the model number. It's 110.20412990.
Any other ideas? Thanks again-

if both look ok then replace the coupler, and pump(making sure clips are good & tight.
Replace the front panel, before you put the top back on locate the wires that connect to the lid switch.

check to see if the lid switch is cracked or broken....or if you hear it click when raising and lowering the lid or on the connector from the washer use a jumper wire from the white and gray wires(not the green) set the washer on spin(keeping arms legs and other haning objects out of the way of course) if it spins, then you have 2 choices bypass the lid switch or replace it.

Hi again-
Due to the lateness of the hour, I just leaned the washer forward onto a blanket and looked underneath. I haven't taken anything apart yet. I'm trying to decide whether it's fixable by me, or to return it to the rascal that sold it to me. I paid $80 for it, and it looks in good shape, even underneath.

I also wasn't able to get it to drain when advancing the dial.
Thanks again-

If I gambled at all, I would say the lid switch and probably the pump need replaced about $50 in parts for a ball park figure.

Libertyappl-
If I short the lid switch, and that was the problem, it should start turning? And the pump- it could take water in but not drain, if broken?
Thanks again-

If you use the jumper on the lid switch it should agitate and spin(complete a cycle), if not you may have other issues. If there is an obstruction of the pump is out it won't drain...... If you can determine if it's the lid switch a bypass would be cheaper for you. The pump if it doesn't drain the water out is around $35 part # 3363394.
