Model Number: LAT9704AAE Brand: Maytag Age: More than 10 years
Maytag washer first problem cold water would not stop filling, even when machine shut off. Have to close cold water spigot to stop. This happened for a week or so. Then last wash cycle, washer would not agitate on either wash or rinse cycle. This is the case for all settings ( regular, perm press, delicate). Washer will fill, and will spin. Have made certain that drum is not off balance; have tried with washer full and empty.

The first thing you may want to do is replace the water inlet valve (#8 on the diagram). It should fix the first problem and might help to eliminate the second problem too.

Hi Gene, this is Tom, who is trying to fix the washer for Denise. thanks for the advice. I took the inlet valve apart and noticed that all the little pores in a circle around the cold water inlet valve were not venting. massaged them with vinegar until clean, reassembled and now the valve works fine.
the remaining issue is that the motor will run in spin mode just fine, but only hums feebly in agitate mode and does not rotate. I cleaned and filed all the contacts in the centrifugal switch (which now appears to be working correctly) and the motor does not appear to have any burnt coils, so I am currently guessing that there are just cruddy contacts in the timer. any more ideas that you may have are appreciated greatly. Hi Tom,
You can remove the cover from the timer and visually inspect all contacts. Gene.

Yes, it could. If the water inlet itself is clogged, then it's better to replace it. Cleaning would not make it reliable.
