Hi All

Just received a agitator post and new screw for it, I thought this part was
supposed to completely lock and not be able to be turned backwards? it has
resistance but it can be turned backwards. is that a problem?

Also does that screw need some kind of compound to stop it from becoming
loose? this is a light plastic,50.00 part, and the 4.00 screw has a thin metal
washer that stops the head from going through that plastic, I would rather
ask about this before I install because I can see that screw loosing up in a
wash or two.

I know at first this sounds simple, but if you looked at it and felt this stuff
you'd understand what I mean

any advise on this would be great before I start.

Ed,

What was the original problem with your washer?

Have you removed the agitator base and checked the splines?

Here is the Service manual.

base was fine, the problem with the original was inside the 2 part plastic agitator its meant to spin one way but its not supposed to spin backwards, that's why I asked about the new one

the orig screw was very tight when I loosened it, I would have used it again but the rubber and tin washer thats part of it could not be used again, that's why I'm asking before I use the new one, they are not made that good to be used twice. Plus there seemed to be some kind of compound in the base that kept the orig screw tight I guess, because when I reinstalled the orig agitator the screw kept coming loose.

In my case the orig agitator was damaged inside, the base and bottom splines where fine.

Does the agitator base moves backward too?

Possible the problem is a bad brakes or transmission.

No the base is fine it sits on the trans spline, the the agitator sits on that everything is normal, the problem is inside the agitator itself, let me explain

if you where to hold the agitator in your hand you would notice it has to
plastic sections if you were to hold the bottom portion steady (this is the
part that would normally sit on the base groves) and then try and spin the
top portion (the ear part) it should only spin one way and lock up the other
way.

the agitator for this particular model must be a very popular replacement part
because you have two plastic inner clips handling the entire weight of the wet loads.

The few questions I have
when you tighten a agitator screw like this do you use some kind of compound on the treads to help it not loosen up?. because you cannot really tighten if so what is the name of it.

that screw or you will force the head of the screw right though the agitator side mounting hole. the only thing that stops it is that tin like washer.

I know on some models the agitator has a diffent setup and is not made this
cheap, you would normally just replace the ears, but in this case its two built
in parts together that are not repairable,

the tranny and base have nothing to do with this whats so ever, they work fine,

Ed,

I never dealt with such problem, but I believe a compound would not hurt.

Have you ever installed a agitator for this model before? I was just told by a
top notch appliance repair person, without something on the treads they will
always work loose within a couple of washes. I thought I saw something like
that when I removed it

Thanks for weighing in

Ed
