what causes the coupler motor and isolation part to wear out? It has broken for the second time in 4 years.

Think of it as a sacrificial part, if it did not break you would be replacing motors and trannies. There are a few reasons why it would go out, piece of clothing gets stuck under the agitator, too large of loads etc...
