Model Number: GSX9885JQ Brand: Whirlpool Age: 1 - 5 years
Washer stops once or twice during complete cycle and hums. After cooldown will start again and usually finishes without any further problems. This starting problem only happens when starting up between cycles. I have been advised that its the drive motor, but could a weak start capacitor cause this problem? Thanks.

Does it only stop in spin or agitate or both.Does it only fail in high speed, or low?
If you have an amp probe, you can check motor current at different periods in the cycle.

I guess I may have described the problem poorly. The motor actually does not stop during any cycle, its only during startup of a new cycle that it starts humming, and won't start. We then go to pause and must wait approx. 10 min, then it starts and generally finishes all cycles. This has been doing this at least 6 months, and has never gotten any worse, always consistent. That's why I doubted the motor going bad, and wondered if it could be a weak start capacitor, since its a startup problem. Thanks again.

Your electronic control board may be the failing item. To verify, check the voltages to the motor when it fails, there should also be start and run winding current at startup.
The control part # is AP3855067.

The control part # is AP3855067. Another check would be to check the motor bearings for lateral play, if so=new motor time.
