I just purchased a new belt and pump on my front loading waser. The pump has 2 new things that my old one did not. There is a plastic rubber flap on the outgoing side of the pump. Is that supposed to stay there to prevent water backflow, or do I take it off like my old one. Also, a clear plastic shield covers the new pump. What is that for and could it possibly get hot and have problems if the pump ever gets hot?

I don't know about this pump specifically, but manufacturers routinely re-design pumps on washers, so I think you can use your as is with no problem. This plastic shield is there to prevent a leak from getting on the pump, and it will do fine.
