Brand: GE   Age: 1 - 5 years

my washer does not agitate anymore. the drive motor is working fine. when it is time for the washer to begin to agitate it free spins like there is a clutch or gear that has went bad. if i mess with the transmission i can get it to work a little bit under no load. it does spin and pump all the water out on that cycle. my question is, is the trans/brake bad

Lightbulb Tub Brakes

Yes, it is most likly the tub brakes, they are designed to let the agitatior move and make the basket stay in place. This is why the washer spins correctly but lets the basket move freely during agitation.
