Hi guys,

I am working on a Whirlpool direct drive washer and I am experiencing a problem I have never run across before. I am hopping someone on here has and can give some advice as to what I need to do.

When the washer stops the spin basket vibrates like crazy as if it is loose but it doesn’t seem to be loose. This only happens when the washer is coming to a stop so I feel like it has something to do with the brakes. Also it doesn’t stop as quickly as it should which also points to the brakes.

I took the agitator out and right at the top between the spanner nut and the transmission shaft there are metal shavings like something under the spin basket is worn or broken but I have not taken the spin basket out yet.

If anyone can shed some light on this for me I would appreciate it.

Thank you,

I figured I would post the repair for this machine so it may help someone in the future.

The hub that fits on the top of the brake that the tub sits was striped out. The groves that the brake locks into were completely gone. So when the brake stops the tub kept turning this caused a terrible vibration.

This was very obvious once I got the tub out but the first time I was there I didn’t have my spanner wrench with me (I hadn’t need it for Whirlpool in a long time). This was a very simple repair I was in and out in 20 minutes.

I think you are talking about the tabs on top of the spin tube that set into the slots in the drive block.
I have seen this before and I think someone failed to tighten the drive block nut tight enough. I replaced the spin tube and drive block, but in retrospect I think I could fix the spin tube tabs by filing the sides to get rid of the ramp worn in it.
