We have a Maytag washer purchased in 1981. It has worked for 29 years without a problem...until today.

Here's the scenario. The tub is not draining. The tub does go through it's entire spin cycle, but not a bit of water drains from the tub.

In addition, the cycle selector dial...this thing shown below, doesn't stop at the end of a wash cycle. It keeps on going right into the next cycle. When the "Regular Fabrics" cycle was done, it kept right on going into the "Permament Press" cycle. I now have a perpetual motion machine!

My husband is pretty handy and can repair this IF we knew where to start. Any clues/hints? Thanks. This forum is a GREAT service.

Problem solved! My daughter likes to overload the washer (the laundry gets done faster that way!). A sock made it's way between the drums and got sucked into the drain line. My dear husband was able to take the thing apart and get it out.

This doesn't answer the question as to why the washing machine was moving from one cycle to the next. Something to do with the water level sensor? Anyway, I just ran a load through successfully!
