Trash Compactor Repair

The compactor can function when the starter knob is turned on once and when it is complete door can not open completely, then turn one more time, i can open the door. What's the problem?

The ram is not retracting completely. Remove the top and look for a limit switch that closes and turns off the motor. (There may be 2) They are usually mounted on 2 very small diameter machine screws. Likely it is out of place or the activator arm is bent. Loosen the screws and adjust the switch so the ram has to travel up a bit further. Can also bend the activator arm a bit to accomplish the same thing. UNPLUG THE UNIT WHEN MAKING ANY ADJUSTMENTS
