I have a Whirlpool trash compactor model GX900QPPB1. At the bottom of compaction stroke unit did not reverse, motor kept running in down direction and the nylon drive gears being stripped. Replaced both the motor and chain drive gears and the motor switch.

New switch (part # 780164) has contacts that are different than original switch (part #777971) but think switch is wired correctly. With new switch installed compactor operates but at bottom of compression stroke when motor reverses there is a loud pop. Compactor will then complete cycle and shut down at top of bin. During the up stroke the compactor runs a bit noiser than the down stroke.

At the bottom of the cycle the "pop" heard is the teeth of the motor drive gear “slipping” over the teeth of the chain drive gear. After the teeth slip the gear teeth engage and the ram moves in reverse to the top of the bin.

The relative position of the motor drive and chain drive gears is fixed - there is no way to adjust the gap between the gears. That said the gap between the motor and chain drive gear does not appear to be excessive. The position of the ram within the frame looks OK. The ram does not bind up on the sides of the frame on either the up of down stroke. All switches checked out OK. Tension of chain is within 1/4".

At some point the gear teeth are going to break. Any idea what is causing the gears to slip at the bottom of the stroke? Any suggestions on adjustments to make or parts to change out?
