Once the fan warmed up it runs OK.
May also have been some moisture in the fan but I would replace it anyways rather than take a chance.

Let it dry out for a longer time.

Could be that there is still moisture in the unit that is completing the circuit.

If the heater is OK then I would just replace the defrost thermostat.

Also if the thermostat measures OK but is deformed/bulged, replace it.
