The self clean does more damage that it's worth in my opinion. I always suggest people not use it unless they have too! But you probably do need the ERC at least and maybe the membrane.

I understand not wanting to spend that much, but at least go to you local recycle center...

Most likely the valve was fine, sounds like the ignitor isn't getting hot enough. Try changing that, it should solve the problem.
