You have a refrigerant leak, probably the evaporator seal. If it all leaks out the compressor will get internal damage. Still, It would be about a $400 repair.

Feel the compressor. If it is vibrating but tubing not hot, you have a bad compressor/ refrigerant leak. Might want to try a new compressor start device to confirm.

If the evaporator is frozen, or the air is not moving fast thru the evaporator, the system will run cool and the frost line will back up to the compressor.

The compressor sucked in non-compressables and got damaged trying to compress these. He basically gave you false info, the fridg is terminal, too costly to fix.
