Default Amana side by side not defrosting
Model Number: ASD262RHRW   Brand: Amana   Age: 1 - 5 years

Our refrigerator was working fine until something blocked the freezer door open and it froze up completely. The evaporator was frozen solid and even the damper had ice in it. I tried to defrost it a little and some ice fell in from the freezer side into the damper area. Since it was defroster it worked for about one week then was frozen solid again. This time I defrosted it completely and a week later it was frozen again. I checked the resistance of the defrost heater and it was about 30 ohms so I replaced the defrost time. It appears it is freezing up again. The compressor does turn off once in a while but it appear the defroster never kicks in, what else could it be? Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Is there any chance that the defrost thermostat is not working? I thought it the defrost thermostat was bad it would never cool down and it does that great until it freezes up and I have to defrost it. The compressor and the evaporator fan cycle off and on but the defrost heater appears not to kick in. Could the ice that fell in the damper between the compartments have damaged the main circuit board, I have no idea where it is located? Thanks in advance.

eriksena,

Most likely the problem is a bad defrost thermostat. It has nothing to do with the cooling process. The purpose of this part is to control the power to the defrost heater during the defrost cycle.

- The part number for the defrost thermostat is AP3802766

Gene,

Thank you I ordered the part and now awaiting the next defrost to install it. I noticed it is just wires with no plugs is there a secret to putting it into the existing plugs or do I just splice it in?

Just splice it in, using a wire nuts. Good luck.
