I returned from a trip to see that my ice maker was only about 1/2 full, which is not normal. The ice seemed to be slowly melting. I turned the unit off and cleaned it as normal. When I have turned it back on, it doesn't make ice. I cleaned the condenser, which was not dirty to speak of, and have monitored the timing of functions such as fan running, water input, water recycling (internal pump operations), grid heat, etc. Everything appears to be functioning at the proper time. However, the evaporator is not cooling. I suspected the evaporator thermistor, which I removed and retried the unit without it, because the literature with the ice maker said it would operate in a time mode (rather than temperature mode) if the evaporator thermistor was open or not present. The unit continues not to cool down the evaporator. I am wondering if the solenoid reversing valve or coil is bad. Does this make sense? Also, can I change the solenoid coil without disrupting the sealed refrigerant? My plans are tentatively to order a new solenoid coil, a new evaporator thermistor, and a new bin (ice control) thermistor and replace them all. Does this make sense? Thank you.
Update: I have measured the resistance of the coil for the reversing solenoid and it reads 385 ohms as shown on the spec sheet. I cooled and heated the two thermistors and they both reacted with the resistance changing in the right direction depending on heat or cool being applied, but I didn't have a means to tell if they were at the spec'd temperatures when I read their resistance. Both of them seemed to be in the ball park.
Second Update: I have followed the diagnotics that run at the beginning of the clean cycle and have solid light during the bin thermistor and evaporator thermistor periods, in fact the light is solid as long as I let the clean cycle run. Following the 11 seconds that are used to diagnose the thermistors, the water valve, condenser fan, hot gas solenoid, recirculating pump and compressor each go on (I can hear them) for 5 seconds each in accordance with the service sheet. The fan and compressor run, but I never feel warm air coming out of the unit. That is true in the clean cycle and on cycle. Also, when I touch the evaporator plate and tubes underneath it, it never gets cold on either cycle, even though the compressor is running. I also disconnected the hot gas solenoid while in the clean cycle and clearly could hear a clip when attached and detached. I am about out of things I think I can do. Any ideas?
Anybody out there that can give me a path forward?
