Well i did some investigation why the frig part was getting warm. I opened up the panels from inside the freezer. There's a build up of frost all over the coils.

I looked at the defrost heater kit that rests at the bottom of the coil. The inside of it is somewhat black? Does that mean it's burnt out and needs replaced? I'm not sure how to check continuity on this.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Jim

Discoloration is a sign of a burnt out heater. The replacement now comes with two elements in the assembly for more effeciency.

Awesome thanks. The one i have is single element. I'm going to go ahead and order it. Thanks, just wanted to be sure.

So i need to thaw out the frost that's on the coils before i installed the new one right?

Another quick question regarding this. Is it possible to have a bad thermostat and defrost heat at the same time? I can't locate the thermostat.

Should i go ahead and order a new thermostat as well?

The thermostat is usually clipped to one of the evaporator coils, and is wired in series with the heater. Its job is to terminate the heat in defrost, so that the freezer compartment won't become excessively warm in the defrost mode. It certainly doesn't hurt to replace it when you replace the heater. It may not be bad at all; but the biggest benefit to replacing it along with the heater is that you won't soon be working inside the freeezer again. It's number 240 in the diagram.
