Default Replacing thermistors (sensor temps) on GE fridge
Model Number: GSS22JEPAWW   Brand: GE   Age: 5 - 10 years

Appliance Parts from AppliancePartPros.com

About 2 weeks ago I noticed my fridge was too warm. Freezer seemed fine. Within 2 days, the fridge was around 60 degrees. The freezer was cold, but everything had defrosted. I noticed a lot of frost on the back of the freezer door, so I removed the panel and melted the frost off the coils with a blow dryer. I also cleaned all the dust from the outer coils. This fixed the problem, but now the fridge is getting warm again (currently at 45 degrees). I noticed that the thermistors have round tops with black bottoms and read that this indicates they are faulty (GE Refrigerator Repair Guide). Unfortunately, this info. doesn't help me much because I don't have a clue how to replace them. Can you offer any help with this? Thanks so much!

It is pretty simple to replace a thermistor. Locate the old defrost thermistor on top of the evaporator (#242 on the diagram). Cut its wire about 2-3" from its body and splice in the new one.

You may want to perform more tests to exactly diagnose the problem. In that case just follow the instructions from one of our previous threads (the reply addressed to bohemian): Freezer is fine, refrigerator is too warm.

- The thermistor Part number: AP3185407

Part number: AP3185407

All thermistors in the refrigerator are identical.

Here are the breakdown diagrams and Replacement parts for General Electric GSS22JEPAWW Refrigerator | AppliancePartsPros.com

When splicing the new thermistor, can I use just normal pvc tape or should I use shrink tubing? If so I need to get a heat gun? For the defrost thermostat can I just splice it the same way as the thermistor.

It's better use a wire nuts and put some plastelina inside after. You can splice in the thermostat the same way.
