What temp should the freezer get up to during a defrost cycle? I caught mine last nite at almost 40°. What might be the culprit?

Sounds like a bad thermistor(s) or/and control board, but the model number you posted is incorrect. Verify and repost it.

I would replace the thermistor on top of the evaporator (#241 on the diagram) first. If it would not solve the problem, replace the main control board. - The thermistor Part number: AP3185407
