Hello,
We just bought this "new and used" GE refrigerator off of Craigslist for our son. We plugged it in and the frig part is fine BUT the freezer isn't getting cold enough to even freeze ice cubes. We set it on "5" as suggested and then turned it up to 8 (9 being the coldest temp setting)...still doesn't get cold enough. Does anyone have any suggestions before we pay big bucks for a repair person to come out? Thanks!

Next you will want to remove the rear cover of the machine. See if the condensor fan is running, and check the condenser for a build up of dust and lint

Maybe this is my problem because I bought this from a Salesperson at a Condominium complex and the frig was unused but had been sitting in a new garage with lots of dust swirling around. Gosh, I can't wait to get to my son's house on the way home from work to see if this is the problem. Thanks so much....you are very helpful!!!!!

Was thanked: 2 time(s) in 2 post(s)
All the symptoms point to a refrigerant leak. Pull the freezer back panel off and check evaporator coils for a partial frost pattern.

Hello,
Well I checked the fan's and they are both running and seem to be fine (no dust or lint on them). I did notice that the copper type pipes don't seem to be cold...does that mean anything? Do you mean that when I take the back panel off that the coil might have frost on them? Thanks so much for your help!

Hi Again, Well we are still trying to figure out WHAT is wrong with the freezer. I went onto the GE site and it said to fill the freezer with 2/3 full of water jugs, so I did that last night. So far its not working, but I am suppose to increase the freezing temp by 1 each 12 hours. Do you think this will really be the problem? I did find out that even though this frig was sold to us as "new & unused" it is a 2005 model, so it has been obviously SITTING for almost 3 years in the model of the condo. Does that bring anything to mind of anything else you can think of that we should try?

Verify that the compressor is running, if it is, call ge for repair as it may be a refrigerant issue which will be under warranty. Sealed systems are warrantied for 5 years, if it is not running let's find out why...Post results
