Model Number: GD5SHAX Brand: Whirlpool Age: 5 - 10 years
2003 Whirlpool Gold Side by Side.
I was out of town (only time anything fails at home) and my wife called frantically because of the smell of electrical smoke. The neighbor came over and they isolated the fridge. Lights still came on. A fan was still blowing underneath, but the electical smell was still present. By morning, the freezer and fridge were both room temp. I plan to dig into it tonight, what should I be looking for? Thanks Ads By Google Related Models |

make sure the fan inside the freezer is working - i'm assuming the compressor fan is working as you said a fan was blowing underneath. it sounds to me like a fan motor is bad thats usually where an electrical burning smell will come from but your probably going to have to take the screws out of the freezer wall and remove it and sniff around till you sniff the burning smell out - electrical burning smells tend to stick around for a bit

I finally was able to dig underneath the fridge last night. The white/biscuit connector to the compressor (starter?) seems to be the problem. When I removed it and started disconnecting the wires, one (blue) came out along with the post from the starter which was black. The plastic of the starter around the post was melted and brown and the starter itself rattles like a child's toy. It still had the faint smell of smoke to it so I know that it, at the least, is dead and have ordered one from APP.
I am hoping that it just died and it's death was not caused by something else. I have checked the compressor for continuity and those checks are all good. I do not have the tools to check the capacitor, but I have heard that they do not often go bad. Open to suggestions on anything else to look for while I am crawling around, but expect the part tomorrow or Thursday and will report on success. |
