There's a sour smell blown out of the back of by the fan. It seems to be mold associated somehow with the defrosting mechanism. I'd like to know how to get to the defrosting pan or whatever is back there in order to clean it.

Here is the operators manual which should help getting the drawer out of the way.

Here is a basic service manual for removing the evaporator cover.
https://secured.whirlpoo...56337f/$FILE/4322228.pdf

Remove the front kick plate and the compressor rear cover so you can check/clean the drip pan (Item 13 in Section 2). Also check that the compressor fan is running when the compressor is running.

Open up the evaporator area and clean/check that.

It is a good idea to flush the drain tube with a 10% bleach solution to kill anything growing in the tube. A turkey baster comes in handy here.
Flush it let it sit for 10 minutes then do it again. Be sure to keep an eye on your drip tray so you do not overfill it.

Depending where the mold is you may have to use the 10% solution in a spray bottle to get at it. Be sure to rinse the evaporator coils with water.
Also remember to wear old clothes unless you are into the tie dye look.
